Whoopi Goldberg, 66, a Hollywood actress, has spoken out about the ‘demeaning’ charges that she wore a fat suit to make her look bigger in the upcoming Emmett Till film.
Whoopi Goldberg has spoken out against rumors that she used a fat suit in order to portray Emmett Till in the upcoming movie and has urged the public to stop making snap judgments based on appearance.
The film features the 66-year-old actress in the role of Alma Carthan, Mamie’s mother, and Emmett’s grandma. The movie centers on the real-life events that led Mamie Till Mobley to seek retribution for her murdered son, Emmett when he was 14 years old.
In 1955, while visiting cousins in Mississippi, a lynching occurred, and Emmett was a victim.
After seeing the film, critic Kyndall Cunningham wrote in Friday’s issue of The Daily Beast that Whoopi’s “distracting fat suit” detracted from the film’s overall quality.
Whoopi confronted the critic and stated that she “doesn’t really care” about the review.
“Another magazine reviewer mentioned how my fat costume diverted her attention while she was writing her review.
During Monday’s episode of The View, she stated, “I’m just going to say this, I don’t really care how you feel about the movie, but you should know it was not a fat suit – that was me.”
To which Whoopi said, “I presume you don’t watch the programme, or you would know that was not a fat suit.”
It’s “acceptable to not be a fan of the movie,” she said, but critics shouldn’t be criticized for how they appear.
An explanation from the Sister Act actress: “Leave your thoughts on the acting, and if you have any questions, just ask. I don’t think you meant to be so condescending.”
Sunny Hostin, Whoopi’s co-panelist, expressed amazement at the fat suit remark and brought up the fact that Whoopi has been quite forthcoming about the “health issues” she has faced.
The actress retorted: “We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed that she simply didn’t know, and maybe she’ll remember that the next time she wants to talk about someone, she should refer to them in the third person as an actor.
To avoid sounding like you don’t know what you’re doing, “don’t make general comments if you’re not sure if that’s them in there.”
Editorial note: “This story has been changed to clarify that Whoopi Goldberg insists she was not wearing a fat suit,” The Daily Beast review.
Till will debut in select theatres across the United States on October 14th. The UK will be among the first to receive it in 2019.
